Riyadh: (Web Desk) Saudi Supreme Court has abolished the whipping sentence. According to the court order, instead of flogging the culprits, they will be kept in jail or fined.
According to a foreign news agency, flogging has been abandoned in Saudi Arabia as a punishment. The Saudi Human Rights Commission made the announcement on Saturday, April 25. The commission described it as part of the ongoing human rights reform process in the country by Shah Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman.
Saudi Arabia has in the past been severely criticized by human rights groups for flogging prisoners. In Saudi Arabia, the country’s Supreme Court has overturned flogging. The Supreme Court said in a statement that the reforms were aimed at meeting international obligations related to reform, punishment and human rights and bringing Saudi Arabia up to international standards.
