Police are searching for the man who opened fire on a subway train in Brooklyn and shot dead at least 10 people during a morning rush hour.
Police in New York on Tuesday evening identified a man they described as an "interested person" who opened fire on a crowded subway train in Brooklyn during a morning rush earlier in the day. About two dozen people were injured, five of them in critical condition.
Police say Frank R. James, 62, rented a U-hole van in Philadelphia. He said a key to the van was found in the luggage compartment on the train, which he thought belonged to a gunman, which included a Glock 9mm handgun, three ammunition magazines, a hatch, Fireworks and a liquid that is believed to have been gasoline.
Police found the van unattended late Tuesday afternoon on a road about five blocks from Kings Highway Station, where they say the gunman had reached the subway, and five from 36th Street Station. Miles away, where the shooting took place.
At a news conference at the police headquarters, James Asg, the police department's chief of intelligence, said Mr James was still at large. Chief Essig said: "We are trying to find out if there is any connection to the subway shooting."
