Apple stops production of its legendary iPod.

The iPod Touch will continue to be available online and in Apple Stores "while supplies last."

Apple announced Tuesday that it will discontinue the iPod Touch - the last iPod model produced by Apple. This marks the end of a device that shaped music listening for 20 years.

"Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and the iPod has not only impacted the music industry, but redefined the way music is discovered, listened to and shared," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

The company first introduced the iPod in 2001 and boasted of the device's capacity of "1,000 songs at CD quality." In 2007, it launched the iPod Touch, which looked like an iPhone.

Apple launched the latest iPod Touch model in 2019. With an Internet connection, the latest iPod Touch can send iMessages and make FaceTime calls. Apple said the iPod Touch will continue to be available online and at Apple Stores "while supplies last."

Why exactly did Apple make this decision? While sales certainly were not stratospheric, a slow-moving production line of iPod touch models in six colors was probably still profitable. But I do not think Apple discontinued the product line that made the brand more than just a computer company for financial reasons.

No, the truth about the iPod is that music had simply become too big for it.

Of course, in 2001, when the first iPod was launched, it was all about freedom. Just as the Sony Walkman had previously freed us to take our music with us wherever we went, the iPod now did the unthinkable and packed 1,000 songs into a cute, handy device. We no longer had to listen to the 10 songs on a standard cassette or CD, or double that on a homemade mixtape.

And the introduction of shuffle and playlist features meant we no longer had to listen to tracks in just one order. The Apple iPod was not the first digital player, but it was the best looking, the coolest, and by far the easiest to use. Just look at the picture at the top of this post: the pleasingly tactile click wheel, the glossy finish, even the font on the screen - it all has a beautiful, classic look.

Granted, you still had to rip CDs or buy digital tracks and then download them to the iPod - and it's easy to forget how tedious that was. But it was worth it.

Over time, iPods got smaller (mini, shuffle, nano) and had color screens so you could even watch movies on them, like Wall-E. Storage capacities expanded so you could store far more than 1,000 songs. DRM was eliminated, which was helpful. And the integration of an iPod into the iPhone helped as well. It's fair to say that every iPhone from the first to the iPhone 13 Pro Max included an iPod equivalent, so having a separate device in your pocket became less important.

But the big change came when Spotify came along and let you stream music. Apple Music followed and suddenly you did not have to store all your music on your device to access it most of the time.

And now, with streaming services offering up to 79 million tracks, there's no portable device in the world that can store more than a fraction of that. So, yes, size is everything.

While the iPod touch can do most of the same things an iPhone can, it's hard to get away from the idea that came with its launch, which was that it's all about music. Sure, thanks to the four-inch display first seen on the iPhone 5, it's still the handiest way to carry your music around, but the smallest iPhone, the third-generation iPhone SE, is not much bigger, and we have long grown accustomed to larger devices.
