Footage circulating on social media shows a man performing in Los Angeles, charging a comedian. One person was in custody, police said.
Authorities say a gunman attacked Dave Chappell on stage as he was performing late Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
Mr. Chappell was finishing his act at the Hollywood Bowl when a man in the audience jumped onto the stage and ran towards the comedian, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said Wednesday.
The man, identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
He was taken to hospital for treatment, and his bail was set at $ 30,000.
A knife blade and a replica handgun were recovered from the scene, the spokesman said, adding that Mr. Chappell was not injured in the attack.
The comedian's spokesman could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the man to take to the stage. Footage circulating on social media shows the man performing Mr. Chappell.
According to Brian Fed News correspondent Brian Sax, several security guards punched and kicked the man.
Ms. Sax wrote that police officers and fire department personnel later loaded the man into an ambulance.
The video later showed the man's elbow at a strange angle. He wrote that actor Jamie Foxx went on stage when Mr. Chappell, 48, was dealt with.
Farshad Dehbozargi, 34, a lawyer on Mr. Chappell's show on Tuesday, said someone had jumped on stage and "tried hard enough" to deal with the comedian.
He said in a phone interview on Wednesday morning, "And then they fought in a way and wrestled and everyone got involved."
"Everyone was shocked," Mr. Dehbozargi added. "No one could believe what was happening."
Mr. Chappell was seen handling the chaotic moment, Mr. Dehbozargi said, adding that the comedian had returned to the stage and the venue had made no security announcement.
Afterwards, Mr. Chappell "was on the mic, apparently a little nervous about the situation at first, and then started making jokes," Sharon Carpenter, who was in the audience, said in a video shared on Twitter.
The Hollywood Bowl spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.
Tuesday night's show, which featured Mr. Chappell and others, was part of "Netflix is a Joke: The Festival," featuring more than 100 artists from all over Los Angeles from April 28 to Sunday.
According to his website, Mr. Chappell was to perform at least four times in the Hollywood Bowl.
Last year, Mr. Chappell came under fire for his comments on transgender people and gender in the comedy special "The Closer" aired on Netflix.
Several organizations, including GLAAD, the organization that oversees news media and entertainment companies for prejudice against L.G.B.T.Q. The community criticized the special as a transphobic.
In an interview with Variety, Ted Sarandon, one of Netflix's two chief executives, later admitted that he had "spoiled" his conversation with Netflix employees about his concerns, but that Mr. Defended the company's decision to move the chapel special.
