Snapdragon Insiders' Smartphone is the worst example of how software updates should be handled in 2022 [Update: Qualcomm responds]

Qualcomm has released information about the next security update for Snapdragon Insiders. More information can be found at the bottom of this page. The article as it appeared on June 14, 2022, is reproduced below.

Qualcomm collaborated with ASUS to launch its first smartphone, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, last year.  

The phone was designed for Snapdragon Insiders, a new community of Snapdragon fans and enthusiasts announced by Qualcomm last year. ASUS designed and manufactured the phone, as well as oversaw distribution, sales, and software support.

Expectations are high for a phone that comes directly from Qualcomm and costs $1,499 USD. At the very least, you expect it to receive security updates on a regular basis. However, it appears that the phone is no longer a priority for Qualcomm or ASUS.

Since March, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders has not received a new feature update. While this is bad enough on its own, the situation becomes even worse when it comes to security updates. 

Although it may appear absurd, the phone has not received a single security update since January. That's the worst it gets. A top-tier flagship from one of the largest chipmakers, which costs $1,499, is running a six-month-old security patch. 

Qualcomm promised the phone would receive "4 years of regular security updates" at launch, but the chipmaker is already six months behind schedule less than a year later.

Certainly, the update situation was not this bad at first. 

According to ASUS' software page, the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders received a new software update roughly every month between August and January.  

According to Redditor u/hdoublearp, the last update was in March, and while the changelog mentions "updated Android security patch," there was no change to the security patch level.  The phone was still running the January 2022 patch.

It should come as no surprise that the phone is still running the same Android version that it shipped with (Android 11).  ASUS and Qualcomm have not stated when the phone will receive Android 12.

We're not clear who is to blame in this situation, but Qualcomm and ASUS both look awful for leaving a top-tier flagship without any security upgrades for months. 

A Qualcomm community manager responded to u/original hdoubleharp's Reddit post by promising to speak with the team and "look to get you an answer." But they also haven't provided any more updates. As soon as Qualcomm or ASUS make a statement on the situation, we'll let you know.

Qualcomm provides information on the next upgrade.

A Qualcomm spokesperson clarified the update issue in a reply on the original Reddit thread shortly after our report went live.  The following security patch will be made available for the phone on June 20th, according to the statement.
