Justin Bieber has revealed that he has a rare condition that has rendered one side of his face paralyzed.
The Canadian singer canceled a number of upcoming shows earlier this week due to illness, and on Friday he informed fans that he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
"It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves, causing paralysis in my face," the 28-year-old singer explained in an Instagram video.
"You can see that this eye isn't blinking. On this side of my face, I can't smile. This nostril is immobile."
What exactly is Ramsay Hunt syndrome?
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that can occur in people who have had chickenpox.
When the dormant varicella-zoster virus reactivates and causes shingles, it can affect the facial nerve, resulting in facial paralysis and hearing loss.

Blisters in the ears or on the roof of the mouth are symptoms of the condition.
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is rare, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), affecting approximately 5 in 100,000 people in the United States, according to one estimate. The elderly are more likely to be affected.
In what ways Ramsay Hunt syndrome is diagnosed and treated ?
A detailed medical history and identification of the characteristic rash and facial paralysis are usually used to diagnose the syndrome.
According to NORD, this can be difficult because symptoms may not appear at the same time. According to the Mayo Clinic, the rash may be completely absent in some cases.
Antivirals and steroids are prescribed once Ramsay Hunt syndrome is diagnosed.
