"Vegas Golden Knights Make a Thrilling Comeback in Stanley Cup Final Opener Against Florida Panthers

LAS VEGAS — Back in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in five years, the Vegas Golden Knights delivered a powerful statement in Game 1 against the Florida Panthers.

Trailing by a goal less than 10 minutes into the game, the Golden Knights showcased their readiness and relentless spirit, mounting a comeback to secure a 5–2 victory and take the lead in the best-of-seven series.

Jonathan Marchessault, one of the six original Knights players who have been with the franchise since its inception in 2017, emphasized the team’s preparedness and composure.

He scored the tying goal in the first period and expressed the team’s determination to play the right way and exhibit discipline throughout the game. Their efforts paid off as they emerged as the better team on the ice.

The turning point came when Zach Whitecloud netted the go-ahead goal with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. This crucial moment was followed by a strong penalty kill and an insurance goal by captain Mark Stone, which was reviewed but confirmed. Reilly Smith sealed the victory with an empty netter, further widening the score margin.

The combination of the Golden Knights’ offensive prowess and goaltender Adin Hill’s outstanding performance, with 33 saves, propelled them to victory.

The game showcased the intensity expected from two Sun Belt teams, as they engaged in fierce physical battles, delivering big hits and engaging in post-whistle confrontations.

However, the series has just begun, and both teams anticipate a continuation of this physical play in Game 2, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas on Monday.

Despite falling behind due to a short-handed goal by Eric Staal, which momentarily deflated the home crowd of 18,432, the Golden Knights demonstrated their resilience once again.

Marchessault, known for his ability to score crucial goals, swiftly answered with a goal before the end of the first period.

In the second period, Hill made an extraordinary stick save, reminiscent of Braden Holtby’s game-changing save against Vegas five years ago. This save against Nick Cousins prevented what would have been a certain goal and underscored the importance of such pivotal moments in games.

Although the Panthers managed to tie the game with 10.2 seconds remaining in the second period, courtesy of Anthony Duclair, it did little to deter the Golden Knights’ momentum.

Whitecloud’s goal, with two-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky screened and unable to see the puck clearly, reignited the passionate crowd.

Bobrovsky, making his first appearance in the final, remained unperturbed despite the loss, highlighting that he played a solid game and acknowledging the Golden Knights’ ability to create numerous scoring chances.

Throughout the game, tensions escalated on the ice. Less than 10 minutes into the first period, Hill expressed his dissatisfaction with Cousins crashing into his crease and responded with a jab, leading to several scuffles.

In the second period, Matthew Tkachuk confronted Vegas’ Nic Hague after a hit in the corner on Cousins and a collision with Brandon Montour after the whistle.

Hill, unyielding, stated his resolve to stand his ground when opponents attempt to push him around, while Florida coach Paul Maurice maintained his calm demeanor, as he did during the first round when his team faced a similar deficit and eventually triumphed.

The Golden Knights’ journey to the final marks their second appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since their inception just six years ago. In their inaugural season, they won the opening game but eventually succumbed to the Washington Capitals in five games.

On the other hand, the Panthers’ return to the final after a 27-year hiatus is a significant achievement. Their previous appearance in 1996 resulted in a sweep by the Colorado Avalanche.

This Cup final showcases the 66th different matchup in NHL history and the 46th since the expansion era began in 1967–68. Interestingly, it is only the third time since the turn of the century that the final features two teams who have never won the league’s championship, with the previous occurrence being the Washington-Vegas matchup.
