Yevgeny Prigozhin, the man currently advocating for a revolt against Russian forces, has a complex background and significant influence in unofficial disinformation campaigns and military operations that align with Russian policies. 

He used to be a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin and currently leads a private military group known as Wagner.

The Wagner Group is not a single company but rather a network of various businesses and assets that are connected through Russian ownership and networks. 

It first emerged in 2014 during the annexation of Crimea, where it supported the Russian military. Since then, the group has reportedly been involved in numerous global conflicts, including Syria, Libya, and Mali, often serving Russian military or political interests.

The group's mercenaries have faced allegations of undermining national sovereignty and engaging in serious human rights abuses such as rape, torture, and summary executions. 

Before the conflict in Ukraine, Wagner mercenaries fought against U.S. forces while supporting the Assad regime in Syria. They have also played a role in advancing Russian interests in Africa, specifically in countries like Libya, the Central African Republic, and Mozambique.

Prigozhin's connection to the Wagner Group was not publicly acknowledged until the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Before that, he consistently denied any involvement with the group and its mercenaries. 

However, after video evidence emerged showing his participation, Prigozhin openly embraced his association with the Wagner Group. He subsequently expressed his dissatisfaction with Russia's conventional military forces, highlighting his role as a representative of the private military company called PMC Wagner.

Prigozhin's emergence as a vocal proponent of revolt against Russian forces and his direction of mercenary troops to capture the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and march on Moscow reflect his evolving position and ambitions within the geopolitical landscape. 

His history of involvement in disinformation campaigns and military operations aligned with Russian interests raises questions about his motivations and the potential consequences of his actions.
