pak vs sri 2nd test 2023- Pakistan Takes Commanding Lead After Sri Lanka's Collapse

pak vs sri 2nd test 2023

Sri Lanka's Woes at the Batting Crease:

Pakistan has taken a firm grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, ending the first day with a lead of 11 runs and eight wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka, who won the toss and opted to bat first, were bowled out for a paltry 166 in 48.4 overs, with only Dhananjaya de Silva (57) and Dinesh Chandimal (34) offering some resistance.

Pakistan's spinners Abrar Ahmed (4 for 69) and Naseem Shah (3 for 41) shared seven wickets between them, while the fielders also contributed with two run-outs and some sharp catches.

Sri Lanka's Early Woes

Sri Lanka's innings got off to a disastrous start when opener Nishan Madushka was run out by Shan Masood in the third over of the day.

Kusal Mendis followed soon after, edging Shaheen Shah Afridi to the substitute Mohammad Rizwan at point.

Angelo Mathews and Dimuth Karunaratne tried to steady the ship, but both fell in quick succession to Naseem Shah, who extracted some seam movement and bounced from the pitch.

Mathews was caught behind by Sarfaraz Ahmed, while Karunaratne was bowled through the gate by a beauty.

Chandimal and Dhananjaya's Resilience

Sri Lanka was reduced to 36 for 4 in the 15th over, and it was left to Chandimal and Dhananjaya to rebuild the innings.

The pair added 85 runs for the fifth wicket, with Dhananjaya playing some fluent strokes on both sides of the wicket. He reached his half-century off 60 balls, hitting nine fours and a six.

Chandimal was more circumspect but also found the boundary four times. However, their partnership was broken by Abrar Ahmed, who had Chandimal caught at midwicket off a short ball.

Pakistan's Dominant Bowling Display:

Sri Lanka's lower order failed to offer much support to Dhananjaya, who was eventually dismissed by a stunning catch by Saud Shakeel at deep midwicket off Abrar Ahmed.

Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught at short leg by Abdullah Shafique off the same bowler, while Ramesh Mendis was bowled by him in his next over.

Prabath Jayasuriya and Asitha Fernando added some late runs, but both were run out by Masood, who had a brilliant day on the field.

Pakistan's Resolute Response:

Pakistan's reply was shaky when Imam-ul-Haq was caught behind by Samarawickrama off Fernando in the second over.

However, Shafique and Masood took charge of the situation and put on a brisk 103-run stand for the second wicket.

Shafique was particularly aggressive, hitting eight fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 74 off 131 balls. Masood was more sedate but also played some crisp shots in his 51 off 47 balls, which included four fours and a six.

He reached his fifty with a six over long-on off Ramesh Mendis, but fell soon after, caught by Karunaratne at slip off Fernando.

Pakistan's Solid Partnership and Hope for More:

Babar Azam joined Shafique at the crease and played some elegant strokes in his unbeaten 28 off 49 balls. The pair added 42 runs for the third wicket before bad light stopped play with Pakistan at 177 for 2 in 37.5 overs.

Pakistan will look to extend their lead on the second day and put Sri Lanka under more pressure, while Sri Lanka will hope for some early breakthroughs and a better bowling performance.
