Google has recently announced a major update to its Android brand, which includes a new logo and a new 3D design for the Android robot.
The new branding aims to reflect the diversity and dynamism of the Android platform, as well as to strengthen the connection between Android devices and Google’s apps and services.
The New Logo:
The new logo features a capital A and a rounder font that matches the Google logo. The color of the logo has also changed from green to black, making it more visible on different backgrounds and screen sizes.
Google says that the new logo “more closely mirrors Google’s logo and creates a balance between the two”.
The New 3D Robot:
The Android robot, also known as the bugdroid, has also undergone a makeover. The bug droid now appears with more dimension and character and can be customized with different materials, colors, and accessories.
Google says that the bug droid “appears as dynamic as Android itself” and can be “a versatile and reliable companion across channels, platforms, and contexts”.
The full-body version of the bug droid has also been updated to ensure that it can easily transition between digital and real-life environments.
The body is now a domed capsule instead of having a flat bottom and legs protruding from it.
The New Features:
Along with the new branding, Google has also launched several new features for Android users, such as:
A new AI widget called Assistant at a Glance brings information to your home screen like weather alerts, travel updates, and event reminders.
An update to the Lookout app, which uses artificial intelligence to generate detailed descriptions of any images you open in the app, making it more accessible for people who are blind or low-vision.
A photo import feature for Google Wallet Pass, which allows you to store any kind of ticket or pass with a barcode or QR code in your Google Wallet.
Zoom and Cisco’s Webex integration for Android Auto, which lets you join video meetings from your car.
A sleep recap feature for Google Fit, which shows you your sleep stats from the night before when you say “Hey Google, good morning”.
The Future of Android:
The new branding and features are part of Google’s vision for the future of Android, which is to provide an open platform that gives people the freedom to create, connect, and do more with Google on Android devices.
Google says that it will continue to innovate and improve Android to meet the changing needs and goals of its users.
Android 14 is set to be released this fall, with new features such as the Material You design system, privacy dashboard, app hibernation, and more. Google will also launch its new phone, the Pixel 8, on Oct. 4.
