Bengals Ride Burrow To 31-17 Win Over 49ers In A Classic

The Cincinnati Bengals (4-3) defeated the San Francisco 49ers (5-3) in a thrilling Week 8 matchup at Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday.

The Bengals were led by their star quarterback Joe Burrow, who threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns on 28-of-32 passing, with no interceptions and a stellar 144.5 passer rating.

Burrow was efficient and effective, spreading the ball to eight different receivers and making clutch throws in key situations.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading scores in the first half. The Bengals opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to tight end Drew Sample, capping off a 12-play, 75-yard drive.

The 49ers responded with a 7-yard touchdown run by rookie running back Trey Sermon, who finished with 89 yards on 18 carries. The Bengals regained the lead with a 31-yard field goal by Evan McPherson, but the 49ers tied it up with a 42-yard field goal by Robbie Gould as time expired in the first quarter.

The second quarter saw more fireworks, as the Bengals scored two touchdowns in a span of less than two minutes. The first one came on a 63-yard bomb from Burrow to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who beat his former LSU teammate Derek Stingley Jr. on a deep post route.

Chase had another big game, catching seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. He leads the NFL with 10 receiving touchdowns and is second with 823 receiving yards.

The second touchdown came on a 20-yard interception return by cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who jumped in front of a pass from Brock Purdy to Deebo Samuel and took it to the house.

Purdy, who was making his first NFL start in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, struggled throughout the game, completing only 18 of 35 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

The 49ers did not give up, however, and scored two touchdowns of their own before halftime. The first one came on a 4-yard pass from Purdy to tight end George Kittle, who had six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

The second one came on a trick play, as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk took a handoff from Purdy and then threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Samuel, who had eight catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. The Bengals led 24-17 at halftime.

The second half was a defensive battle, as neither team could find the end zone. The only points came from McPherson, who kicked two more field goals of 33 and 37 yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

The Bengals defense held the 49ers to only 97 yards of offense in the second half and forced two turnovers: an interception by safety Jessie Bates III and a fumble recovery by linebacker Logan Wilson.

The Bengals offense controlled the clock and ran out the final minutes with some hard-nosed runs by Joe Mixon, who had 76 yards on 19 carries.

The Bengals improved to 4-3 and moved into second place in the AFC North, behind the Baltimore Ravens (6-1). They will face the Seattle Seahawks (4-3) at home next week.

The 49ers dropped to 5-3 and fell into third place in the NFC West, behind the Los Angeles Rams (7-0) and the Arizona Cardinals (6-1). They will host the Green Bay Packers (5-2) next week.

This was a classic game between two historic franchises that have met three times in Super Bowl 3. The Bengals avenged their losses in Super Bowl XVI and XXIII with a dominant performance by Burrow, who showed why he is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league.

The 49ers showed some fight with their backup quarterback, but could not overcome their mistakes and injuries. Both teams have playoff aspirations and will look to bounce back next week.
